Janet Sheiner: United States; Look at the keypad on your phone. 6-6-6-3-9 spells money. Some would argue that this means money is an evil thing. Others will tell you that money is just a tool to allow easy trade when barter isn’t practical. It is undoubtedly a collective hallucination where simple pieces of paper can buy anything, even love, despite songs to the contrary. A slippery creature it meets all our needs yet leaves us needing more. The artwork and discussions featured here explore how we are both controlled by and control the currencies we value. Objectively it is all just so much paper. Subjectively our relationship to money is intensely personal, seductive and volatile.
